UNITED GATEWAYSM CREDIT CARD SCHOLARSHIPS STRENGTHEN THE PIPELINE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF PILOTS
$1.2 Million Commitment to United Aviate Academy’s Scholarship Program Will Create Additional Pathways to the Flight Deck for Aspiring Aviators
WILMINGTON, D.E.– June 25, 2024 – Today, the United GatewaySM Card from Chase announced it is committing $1.2 million to the scholarship program for United Aviate Academy, United Airlines’ wholly owned flight school located in Goodyear, Arizona that is creating additional pathways to the flight deck for aspiring aviators. The scholarships will create opportunity for a larger pool of qualified candidates to help meet the ongoing demand for more pilots. The United Gateway Credit Card is contributing a portion of every United purchase to fund the scholarships.
Solidifying Pilot Pipeline
United Aviate Academy, which opened in 2022, has a rigorous curriculum to prepare students for a career in aviation. Students must complete a robust and intensive course of study and flight training, including computer-based instruction, ground training and aircraft flight training. Students must also successfully obtain six FAA-required ratings and certifications prior to graduating from the Academy and pursuing their Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification – the highest achievement of pilot certification required to fly professionally.
“At United Aviate Academy, we help our students achieve their professional pilot dreams by providing the best aviation education, impactful mentorship, all while upholding world-class safety and training standards,” said Michael Hales, United Aviate Academy CEO. “We are proud to work closely with Chase to champion the next generation of aviation excellence.”
Since 2021, JPMorgan Chase has provided a total of $3.6 million in scholarship funds in an effort to solidify the next generation of pilots. United has matched each Chase scholarship commitment. Together since 2021, the companies have committed $7.2 million towards the scholarship program.
Creating Opportunity for Qualified Candidates
United works closely with industry organizations to educate aspiring aviators of the many pathways to the flight deck. These organizations select and award scholarship recipients, with grants funded by United and Chase. The organizations include:
- Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP)
- Sisters of the Skies (SoS)
- The Latino Pilots Association (LPA)
- The Professional Asian Pilots Association (PAPA)
- National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA)
- Women in Aviation International (WAI)
The most recent United Gateway Card from Chase scholarship recipient, Je’Sika B. – a WAI member – was surprised with the news of her scholarship at United Aviate Academy.
“The United Cards from Chase create opportunities for people to explore the world and these scholarships are one way we can create a new avenue for motivated, qualified and passionate students to do just that through a career as a professional pilot,” said Laurinda Rainey, Managing Director and General Manager, United Airlines Co-brand at Chase.
